Entry Acceptance Rules

For each entry, please label and submit your bottles according to the following guidelines (read carefully!):

  • This is a two-bottle competition; one bottle is used for judging, the second is held in reserve in case the beer advances to the Best Of Show round, or if the first bottle is damaged or not suitable for judging.
  • 12oz brown glass bottles are recommended (we cannot guarantee that clear, green or blue bottles will be kept out of light during storage and organization).
  • 22oz / 750ml bottles are accepted; we still recommend submitting two, but for still or petillant meads and ciders you may submit one bottle at your discretion. Be aware that the same opened-and-resealed bottle would be used for Best Of Show, if your entry advances, and this may affect how well it does at the BOS table.
  • Swingtop (Grolsch) bottles are accepted but discouraged.
  • Growlers and kegs will not be accepted.
  • All bottles should be free of identifying marks; commercial bottles should have their labels completely removed.  While we encourage recycling, if you do not remove commercial labels from your beer, we will not judge them.
  • Print your entry form(s) and bottle labels from this website, and attach them to your bottles with rubber bands only! NO TAPE OR GLUE! NO TAPE OR GLUE! NO TAPE OR GLUE! (If you've ever organized bottles for a competition, you know why this is so important!) Only need your bottles labeled.  No other forms needed. The software prints out four labels.  We only need 2 bottles.

Be meticulous about noting any special ingredients that must be specified. Failure to note such ingredients may impact the judges' scoring of your entry.  

All entrees must be received at drop off location(s) by deadlines.  No exceptions.  

Entries will be judged prior to the awards ceremony at the Cooper's Seafood House. NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED outside of the acceptance window.  Your entries will not be judges, don't even try.

Bottles will not be returned.

Any entries not adhering to these guidelines may be disqualified at the sole discretion of the competition organizer.

Packing and Shipping

Carefully pack your entries in a sturdy box. Line the inside of your carton with a plastic trash bag. Partition and pack each bottle with adequate packaging material. Please do not over pack!

Write clearly: Fragile. This Side Up. on the package. Please only use bubble wrap as your packing material.

Enclose each of your bottle labels in a small zip-top bag before attaching to their respective bottles. This way it makes it possible for the organizer to identify specifically which entry has broken if there is damage during shipment.

Every reasonable effort will be made to contact entrants whose bottles have broken to make arrangements for sending replacement bottles.

If you live in the United States, please note that it is illegal to ship your entries via the United States Postal Service (USPS). Private shipping companies have the right to refuse your shipment if they are informed that the package contains glass and/or alcoholic beverages. Be aware that entries mailed internationally are often required by customs to have proper documentation. These entries might be opened and/or returned to the shipper by customs officials at their discretion. It is solely your responsibility to follow all applicable laws and regulations.

Best of Show

The 1st place entry in each category will advance to the Best of Show (BOS) round with a single, overall Best of Show, and runner up selected.  The Best of Show judging will be based on the beer that is best brewed to the style per 2015 BJCP style guidelines.

Best of Show will receive the Crystal Lederhosen, yeah that's right, Crystal Lederhosen.  Ok, a glass trophy plaque with lederhosen logo etched on it.

And a Blue Best of Show ribbon that is huge.

And be brewed by xxx and served at their tap room on a date TBD.

The first runner-up Best of Show will receive a large white ribbon that says First Runner-Up Best of Show……. Large like the BOS one.

  • First place will a Yellow Ribbon and a special stein/mug..
  • Second Place will receive a Red Ribbon.
  • Third Place will receive a Black Ribbon.


The 2018 Champion's Cup winner will get to.... TBD... last year it was to brew their winning recipe alongside Benny Brewing Co. Head Brewer/Owner, Ben Schonfeld! (Actual recipe made will be within limits of Benny's production system, ingredient sourcing, and legal restrictions).

Mead Cup winner will receive a special award.

Cider winner will receive a special award.

Scores and winners will not be announced until mm/dd, at Cooper's.

Awards will be available for pick up after the ceremony concludes. Awards and score sheets not picked up will be mailed to participants. Results will be posted to the competition web site within 24 hours. (Hey - we will be at Cooper's Ship Bar, so gives us some slack - come out and enjoy it yourself too!)

Circuit Qualification

While not a qualifier for any other event, we encourge you to enter the other region's competitions: The Conical Cup, and Northeast Fair - while not AHA/BJCP santioned, they are fun events.

For AHA/BJCP sanctioned: Malt Madness and War of the Worts are well run, with great judging feedback.
